Author, published songwriter, and recording artist (as well as former history teacher and elementary reading specialist), Mark Pennington, a.k.a. "Bronco Charlie," would love to perform The Gold Rush Musical! with your 4th grade students. The hour-long interactive performance is suitable for one, two, or three grade-level classes and their parents. Perfect for fundraisers, a spring musical, or your Gold Rush unit.

Readers' Theater and 12 Song Gold Rush Video with Lyrics... In addition to authentic period music, which Mark sings and plays with a variety of instruments, each presentation includes a dad joke-filled, historical story-packed readers theater that features your students as the stars. Your students receive the script and a 12-song video with lyrics to practice for the performance. Everyone gets involved! Students sing and play along with dozens of percussion instruments and kazoos. Dress in period costumes if you wish!

Fluency Practice... Each of the 12 Gold Rush songs includes fluency worksheets for repeated reading practice—formatted with word counts. Students record their cold and hot timings on the timing sheet to track progress.

Reading Comprehension and Vocabulary... Each of the 12 Gold Rush songs features comprehension/vocabulary worksheets with 5 embedded questions per song.

  • Includes background knowledge about the song contents.
  • Answers to the comprehension questions.

Songwriting Workshop... Students write their own song lyrics to one of the Gold Rush songs, and Mark records their original song. Your students are published songwriters!

To book Mark's musical author visit, email with suggested dates and times for your performance. Or phone Mark at 888.565.1635. Book NOW to get your preferred date! Very reasonable performance fee.

Interested in having Mark write and record your own completely original school songs (spirit songs, alma maters, announcement lead-ins) to build your school brand and increase school spirit?
