Remedial Spelling Literacy Center
Do you have a class or classes in which your grade-level spelling program is a good fit for some of your students, but extremely challenging for others? You want these latter students to practice grade-level spelling to keep up with their classmates, but also catch up with previous grade-level spelling patterns.
What if you could remediate the un-mastered spelling patterns for each of your students in a literacy center (or station)? You can! The Remedial Spelling Literacy Center Grades 4–8 has been designed to help your students master their remedial spelling deficits in the quickest possible time. Program prep is minimal and set-up is simple. Answers are provided with each task and your students will do all the correcting to learn from their own mistakes, except for the short formative assessments included for each lesson.
Teachers administer the Diagnostic Spelling Assessment to form groups of students to participate, as the data indicate, in eight Spelling Workshops. The directions for each of the workshops are the same. The Spelling Workshops consist of the following: Short Vowels, Silent Final e, Consonant Digraphs, Long Vowels, Diphthongs, Controlled Vowels, Conventional Spelling Rules, Language Influences.
Each workshop provides Spelling Worksheets to help students collaboratively learn previous grade-level sound-spelling patterns. These sound-spelling patterns perfectly complement the Common Core State Standards phonics patterns for kindergarten through fourth grade. The 102 worksheets each focus on one sound-spelling pattern and provide a spelling sort, word jumble, rhyme or book search, and a short written formative assessment.
Students collaboratively complete the Spelling Worksheet and self-correct to learn from their mistakes. Students individually complete the formative assessment and then mini-conference with the teacher to determine if each student has mastered the sound-spelling pattern. Yes, recording matrices are provided for you to monitor the students’ progress.
This program also provides group norms, leadership roles, task card directions, and answer sheets for each lesson or activity and both pocket chart and larger center signs. You will also get literacy center rotation options to add this center to your own literacy centers or incorporate into the author’s six grade-level Academic Literacy Centers.
You, your students, and their parents will see measurable results after using the lessons provided in this remedial literacy center.
