Quick Overview

Diagnostic ELA/Reading Assessments has the diagnostic English-language arts and reading assessments that every elementary, middle and high school English-language arts, English-language development, special education, and reading intervention teacher needs to accurately and efficiency determine the relative strengths and weaknesses of their students' literacy skills. Here are 32 whole-class diagnostic assessments and recording matrices that are easy to administer, correct, record, interpret, and apply to help conscientious teachers differentiate ELA/reading instruction. All but two of the assessments (the reading fluencies) are administered whole-class. Most are in multiple choice format. Scantrons® are welcomed! Assessments have corresponding recording matrices: the reading-based assessments are efficiently grouped together; the grammar and mechanics are on one matrix; the spelling has its own matrix. Assessments include phonemic awareness, phonics, sight words, reading fluencies, spelling patterns, spelling rules, grammar, mechanics, and writing fluencies. Assessments are all comprehensive and prescriptive; none is a random sample, so all can be used to efficiently design differentiated instruction. Field tested in hundreds of classrooms, these reliable diagnostic assessments will immediately upgrade your teaching expertise and help you efficiently target instruction for all off your students. 110 pages

  • Diagnostic ELA/Reading Assessments has the diagnostic English-language arts and reading assessments that every elementary, middle and high school English-language arts, English-language development, special education, and reading intervention teacher needs to accurately and efficiency determine the relative strengths and weaknesses of their students' literacy skills. Here are 36 whole-class diagnostic assessments and recording matrices that are easy to administer, correct, record, interpret, and apply to help conscientious teachers differentiate ELA/reading instruction. All but one of the assessments are administered whole-class. All but three of the assessments are in multiple choice format. Scantrons® are welcomed! All of the 32 assessments have corresponding recording matrices: the reading-based assessments are efficiently grouped together; the grammar and mechanics are on one matrix; the spelling has its own matrix. Here are the assessments in Diagnostic ELA/Reading Assessments--

Alphabetic Awareness Assessment. Assesses the alphabetic sequence and upper case-lower case match.

Phonemic Awareness Assessments. Simple ten-item Syllable Awareness, Syllable Rhyming, Phonemic Isolation, Phonemic Blending, and Phonemic Segmenting whole-class assessments with multiple choice symbols or icons.

Vowel Sounds Phonics Assessment. Assesses short vowels, silent final e, long vowels, vowel digraphs, vowel diphthongs, and r-controlled vowels in a nonsense word (eliminates prior knowledge of sight words), whole-class, multiple choice format.

Consonant Sounds Phonics Assessment. Assesses consonant digraphs, beginning and ending consonant blends in a whole-class, multiple choice format.

Outlaw Words (Sight Words) Assessment. Assesses the most common 99 non-phonetic words in a whole-class, multiple choice format.

Outlaw Words (Sight Words) Fluency Assessment. Assesses the most common 114 non-phonetic words in a fluency passage.

Rimes (Word Families) Assessment. Assesses the most common 79 rimes in a whole-class, multiple choice format.

Sight Syllables. Assesses the most common 49 sight syllables in a whole-class, multiple choice format.

Reading Fluency. The “Pets” fluency passage is leveled in a unique pyramid design: the first paragraph is at the first grade (Fleish-Kincaid) reading level; the second paragraph is at the second grade level; the third paragraph is at the third grade level; the fourth paragraph is at the fourth grade level; the fifth paragraph is at the firth grade level; the sixth paragraph is at the sixth grade level; and the seventh paragraph is at the seventh grade level. Thus, the reader begins practice at an easier level that builds confidence and then moves to more difficult academic language through successive approximation. As the student reads the fluency passage, the teacher will be able to note the reading levels at which the student has a high degree of accuracy and automaticity.

Diagnostic Grammar Assessment. Assesses the parts of speech, types of sentences, pronoun usage, verb forms, modifiers, and more in a whole-class, multiple choice format.

Diagnostic Mechanics Assessment. Assesses capitalization, punctuation, and quotation marks in a whole-class, revise these sentences format.

Diagnostic Spelling Patterns Assessment. Assesses the most common 64 spelling patters in a whole-class format.

Eight Conventional Spelling Rules Tests. Assesses the eight most common advanced spelling rules in eight 20-word spelling tests.

Eight On-Demand Writing Assessments. Assesses the eight standards-based essays detailed in the Common Core Writing Standards in timed on-demand assessments with connected text and graphic organizers.

The author of these Diagnostic ELA/Reading Assessments (Mark Pennington, MA Reading Specialist) has written four curricula that provide the resources to differentiate instruction according to these diagnostic data: Teaching Reading Strategies, Teaching Grammar and Mechanics, Teaching Spelling and Vocabulary, and Teaching Essay Strategies.
